Who, Why, and What We Do

cropped-2-3.jpgphilippine-mapThe Philippine-American Association of Alabama (PAAA, Inc.), is a non-profit organization, located in Huntsville, Alabama and just celebrated its 29th birthday! We are Filipinos, Americans, and Filipino-Americans that promote friendship and brotherhood, to preserve the traditions and culture of the Philippines, and to foster civic, charitable, and educational awareness in the community.  Our members come from Huntsville, Madison County, and other areas of North Alabama and Southern Tennessee.  Organized in 1988, the PAAA, Inc. has participated in cultural, civic, and other events at schools, churches, and other organizations in the community.

In keeping with our goal, the Association sponsors get-togethers for the membership, usually on or in conjunction with traditional holidays. These include Valentines Day, Easter, Fourth of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.  In addition, in June, we observe Philippine Independence Day.  At these functions, we typically have a potluck meal. The Association’s Social Activities committee prepares programs that include entertainment, musicals, and games for children and adults. Door prizes and drawings add to the excitement at our get-togethers, along with dancing and karaoke singing.  These activities provide a time when Filipinos in the area can get together, converse in their own language, eat dishes prepared in the Filipino manner, and interact with others of the same cultural background.

The Association elects new Executive Board members and three members to the Board of Directors on the first Saturday of August at a general membership meeting. The second Saturday of September, the Association sponsors an Annual and Inaugural Ball, during which the Association’s officers for the coming year are inducted. We typically have prominent government officials and consular officials from the Philippine Embassy join us for some of these occasions.  Recognizing that our children are our most valuable assets, each year, we recognize and award three students each from the elementary, middle, and high school levels for outstanding academic performance.  The Association also awards two $800 scholarships to our deserving college students; one is awarded for merit and the other for merit plus need.  The PAAA, Inc, activities are financed by annual membership dues, fundraisers, and donations of our generous friends and sponsors.  Our biggest fundraiser is the traditional Christmas caroling in December.  Interested sponsors (members carol3and friends) get together and invite our carolers to come to a designated home to sing traditional and Philippine carols in return for a donation to the Association.  Our carolers have always been well received and all have fond memories of the occasion.

The Association also strives to provide social, emotional, and financial support to our members and friends.  Our Spiritual and Benevolence committee provides such assistance.  Members are approved by the Board Of Directors and become our family away from home.  Membership fee is $10.00 a year and membership is free to our seniors once they have been a paid member for one year.  Membership inquiries can be directed to the Membership committee chairperson and all other inquiries to the PAAA President through the contact us form.
